Thirty sculptures of famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero are under restoration in various outdoor sites in Medellin, Antioquia Museum reported .
Exposed outdoors in the streets and parks of Medellín , the 27 works that represent people or animals generous shapes , characteristic style of its creator, have suffered the effects of natural erosion, acid rain and vandalism.
" Botero sculptures were badly damaged in the covering patina bronze , which gives them a lustrous, glossy look ," he told AFP María Adelaida Bohorquez, restorative Antioquia Museum , the institution that has the most Botero works .
"It's pretty obvious , you can see both the metal and once you see the metal it is deteriorating ," he said .
The recovery process involves washing with neutral detergent and then remove the patina , a layer that protects the bronze golden color which the sculptures are made with sandpaper to condition the metal.
"After a new patina is applied and finally a wax, it will work to protect the sculpture gets ," said Bohorquez .
The proposal to restore the original color and appearance of the sculptures was presented to Botero , who read the report and endorsed the project.
" The sculptures are going to have the tone that originally had ," he said in reference to the shades of bronze color .
The official regretted especially acts of vandalism in the sculptures , including inlaid gum, graffiti , bumps and cracks.
"There are very deep grated that can not be eliminated ," said restorer , who said that after the process of maintaining many of these brands will not be visible , except for the eye of experts.
The expert explained that the work must be done carefully to avoid damaging the integrity of the piece , so welding machines to erase the marks can not be used.
The museum will restore 23 sculptures in the Plaza Botero, where the headquarters of this institution is located, three more in the Parque San Antonio and one in the Parque Berrio , a work expected to be completed by 31 December this year .
Botero, 81, is one of the most prized living artists at art auctions , and his works are not only found in the finest museums in the world but also in public spaces in many cities.
